WTO-Top komende week in Genève
Van 30 November – 2 december komt de WTO bijeen in Genève. Dat is hun manier om ‘Seattle’ te herdenken. Er zullen demonstraties en acties zijn en tegenprogramma’s. Die krijgen echter internationaal weinig aandacht, doordat alle aandacht op de klimaattop in Kopenhagen gericht lijkt te zijn. (English translation at bottom)

Op zaterdag 28 november is er een demonstratie. Die vertrekt om 14.00 van Place Neuve en zal langs het hoofdkantoor van de WTO trekken

Op zondag is er iets van een tegenconferentie op Salle Communale de Plainpalais, Rue de Carouge 52, Genève.
De top zelf is van maandag 30 november tot woensdag 2 december. Autonome groepen roepen op tot acties en blokkades gedurende die dagen.
Ook zijn er dan nog meer tegenconferenties, zoals deze van ICTSD (met ook allerlei boeven in het programma).
Los daarvan is er een ‘karavaan’ die in Genève begint en dan via Parijs, Brussel en Hamburg naar Kopenhagen gaat.

Wat het officiële programma betreft, wordt ervan uitgegaan dat dit weliswaar een volle ministeriële conferentie betreft, maar dat ze die vooral houden vanwege de symboliek en omdat ze statutair verplicht zijn eens in de twee jaar bijeen te komen. Toch staan er ook echte onderhandelingen op de agenda die ernstige gevolgen kunnen hebben. WTO-directeur Lamy heeft het als volgt omschreven.

WTO resurgence attempt in Geneva
Next week the WTO is going to convene at its headquarters in Geneva (Monday November 30 – Wednesday December 2). It is their way to commemorate ‘Seattle’. There will be protests and counter-programs. But there is not much attention for that internationally, as everything seems to be eclipsed by the coming climate-summit.
Tomorrow, Saturday 28, a demonstration starting at 14.00 at Place Neuve (see details here). This demonstration will walk past the WTO-headquarters.

On Sunday there is some counter conference: at the Salle Communale de Plainpalais, Rue de Carouge 52, Genève.
The summit itself is from Monday – Wednesday Dec. 2. Autonomous groups in Switzerland are calling for ‘direct action and blockades’ during those days.
Also there will be more counter program, like the Geneva Trade and Development Symposium form ICTSD (with many crooks in the program too)
Apart from that there is this caravan starting in Geneva then going via Paris, Brussels, Hamburg to Copenhagen.

As for the official program; it is understood that it is a full ministerial meeting, but that they convene mainly because of the symbolic value and because they are obliged to have one every two years. Still there are also real negotiations on the agenda, that can have serious consequences. Pascal Lamy described what the ministerial will be about.

As for the Swiss police: Their victims from previous protests are still battling to get some compensation. Like British photographer Guy Smallman, who lost half of his leg when they shot him with a grenade during the 2003 G8-protests.
