Ma 31 Mei: Progressieve politiek in Latijns-Amerika
In het kader van de serie Real World Economics wordt op 31 mei een bijeenkomst gehouden dat het beleid van progressieve regeringen in Latijns-Amerika tegen het licht houdt. Bekeken wordt wat er terechtgekomen is van hun streven om de privatiseringen van eerder neoliberaal beleid tegen te gaan.(English version below).
Linkse regeringen in landen als Bolivia, Venezuela en Ecuador gaan er prat op beleid te voeren dat haaks staat op het neoliberale beleid van privatiseringen. Deze regeringen zijn opgekomen door verzet van de bevolking tegen het neoliberale beleid van de jaren negentig en de schade die dat toebracht aan strategische- of basisvoorzieningen als water, vervoer of fossiele brandstoffen. De nieuwe linkse regeringen hebben ingezet op het ongedaan maken van de neoliberale dienstenstructuren, boden het hoofd aan transnationale ondernemingen en bevorderden alternatieve beleidsopties op het gebied van diensten (in de vorm van nationaliseringen, en ‘community-state partnerships’).
Op deze bijeenkomst wordt bekeken hoe de rollen van de staat, markt en gemeenschap aan het veranderen zijn bij dit nieuwe beleid. Sprekers zijn Daniel Chavez, van het Transnational Institute Amsterdam. Anders dan aangekondigd zal Roberto Calzadilla, ambassadeur van Bolivia in Nederland, verstek moeten laten gaan wegens verplichtingen elders. Wel treedt aan Sunil Tankha (Lecturer in Public Policy and Management, ISS) die onder meer onderzoek heeft gedaan naar privatisering van de energiesector in Brazilië. Discussianten zijn Antonio Carmona (Political Science/International Relations University of Amsterdam) en Brid Brennan (Alternative Regionalisms Programme Coordinator at TNI)

Monday May 31 Progressive politics in Latin America
The leftist governments of countries such as Bolivia, Venezuela and Ecuador have advocated the opposite of neoliberal privatization policies. These governments emerged as the result of popular dissent against the implementation of neoliberal policies in the nineties and how they affected basic and strategic services such as water, transport or gas. The new leftist governments have addressed the challenges of dismantling the neoliberal services structures, combating transnational corporations interests and promoting alternative policy solutions to services delivery (nationalization, community-state partnerships).
This session explores how the roles of the state, the market and the community are changing under these new services frameworks.
