(English version at bottom)

Nicaragua: two revolutions in 40 years

In 1979, an epic revolution against the dictatorship of the Somoza family took place in Nicaragua. The current president of the country, Daniel Ortega, came into power in 2006, but had already governed between 1985 and 1990 as the first president of the Sandinista Revolutionary Government. Little by little Nicaragua has lost trust in their current government for economical, environmental and antidemocratic reasons.

On the 18th of April 2018, many people from different parts of the society – from students to pensioners – took the streets to protest. The protest were met with heavy repression and violence from the state. Ortega’s government turned into a regime.

Right now, a civic revolution is taking place in the country, where at least 125 people have been killed. What has happened in 39 years that could explain the current situation?

In order to have a conversation about this topic, we invite you to watch the movie “HEIRESS OF THE WIND”, from the Nicaraguan filmmaker Gloria Carrión Fonseca, followed by a discussion with a Nicaraguan feminist activist and scholar visiting NL.
